How to Care for Your Hair in the Fall

How to Care for Your Hair in the Fall

Are you worried that you're excessively losing hair?

Perhaps you’ve noticed your hair is thinning and would like to return life to your locks.

Maybe you’re simply looking for a way to add more volume to your hair in the fall season.

In this blog post, we discuss how you can fight hair thinning while providing tips on fall hair care.

End of Summer Hair Loss is a Real Thing

When there’s a change in seasons, it can impact the health of our hair, including its growth, cycle, and quality.

While it’s normal to shed as many as 100 strands of hair each day, certain seasons can result in more hair loss for some people.

Hair loss towards the end of summertime is real, and studies suggest that women and men may experience hair loss due to their hair follicles entering a phase known as telogen effluvium (TE).

Scientists believe that when hair is exposed to hot weather in the summer, as much as 10-15% of hair follicles can begin this resting phase, which leads to more shedding than usual.

How Hair Changes in the Fall

To understand the changes that go on during hair loss, it’s crucial to learn about the cycle of hair follicles.

Unfortunately, hair follicles aren’t always actively growing, and our hair will only go through this cycle for two to seven years.

At any given time on a healthy scalp, around 80% to 90% of our hair follicles are working to grow new hair.

This means that between 10% to 20% of hair follicles in the scalp are in a dormant, resting state.

But this number can increase in the fall due to the reasons mentioned above.

How to Adopt a Healthy Hair Routine for Fall

Luckily, there are a few things you can do to help encourage the growth of your hair, all of which you can do from the comfort of your home and during any season.

1. Brush Before You Shower

Simply take 60 seconds to detangle your hair strands to keep them strong even when you shower.

Because our hair is more likely to break when wet, be sure to get rid of knots while your hair is still dry. Try our beautiful hair brush.

2. Condition Hair Correctly

A small drop of conditioner is enough to keep your hair healthy, no matter the length or texture.

Be sure to leave the conditioner on for at least a few minutes before you wash it off.

3. Use Hair Masks

Don’t skip using a deep conditioner or hair mask at least once every week to keep your hair smooth and hydrated.

This is even more important if you regularly style your hair or use hot tools.

4. Eat Healthy Foods

Because hair is mostly made up of protein, making sure that you eat a balanced diet is essential. Be sure to add the following items to your weekly grocery list:

  • Meat
  • Fish
  • Beans
  • Eggs
