Injections In Androgenetic Alopecia

Twenty-six healthy volunteers of both sexes with moderate androgenetic alopecia received six sessions, two weeks apart, of 3 mL of an injectable hyaluronic acid compound supplemented with vitamins, ions and amino acids. Macro-photographs showed significant improvement in hair thickness, shine and density, and a reduction in hair loss, with excellent tolerability and no complications. Of the volunteers, 88.5% said it improved their appearance (Siquier-Dameto et al., 2024). There was no control group, and the product contained other ingredients.

Cells And Mice

In lab cells, hyaluronic acid enhanced proliferation, migration and aggregation of hair dermal papilla cells. In mice with chemotherapy-induced alopecia, topical hyaluronic acid tended to decrease hair loss, and minoxidil-loaded hyaluronic acid microneedles showed better hair growth than topical minoxidil even at 10% of the dose (Kim et al., 2022). That is an animal and cell study.

A Safety Report

A case report described a patient with reduced arterial blood flow after hyaluronic acid filler injection in the temporal region and subsequent hair loss. Blood flow was restored with hyaluronidase injection and the hair loss proved to be temporary (van den Elzen et al., 2022). It is a single case, and a filler injection, not a scalp product.
