Gray Hair in Men: Why Men Go Gray, When, and What Helps
Most men go gray because of their genes and age, and men tend to gray more than women. Going gray early has also been linked to family history, smoking, carrying extra weight, and low vitamin B12 or iron stores. Some of those you can change.
This guide covers when men usually go gray, what speeds it up, how gray hair affects the way you're seen, and your options, from embracing it to supporting your natural color.
Key fact: Hair color is set at the root as each hair grows. Anything that changes graying, for better or worse, shows up only in new growth, over months rather than days.

The Short Answer
- Men tend to have more gray hair than women at the same age. Genetics and ancestry set most of the timing.
- In young men, a family history of early graying, obesity and heavier smoking are the strongest links to going gray before 30.
- Graying in your mid-30s is common and usually normal. Graying in your teens or early 20s is worth a check-up.
- Gray hair makes men look older to others. Whether that matters to you, there are options: embrace it, cover it, or support your natural color.
At What Age Do Most Men Turn Gray?
There's no single age. Timing depends mostly on your genes and ancestry, but by middle age most men have some gray. Men of Caucasian descent tend to gray earlier than men of Asian or African descent, and men tend to have more gray hair than women at the same age.
Graying much earlier than is typical for your background is called premature graying. How premature graying is defined, and what causes it.
Is Graying at 35 Normal?
Yes. Some gray in your mid-30s is common and usually just genetics at work. It's earlier than average for some men, but not "premature" by the medical definition. If it's happening fast, in patches, or alongside other symptoms, mention it to your doctor.
Why Do Men Go Gray?
Gray hair grows in when the pigment cells in each follicle make less melanin. In men, several factors speed that up.
Family History
This is the biggest one. If your father or older brothers grayed early, you're far more likely to as well.
Weight
Carrying extra weight has been linked to going gray earlier, and to graying more heavily, in young men.
Smoking
Heavier smoking is linked to graying before 30. Quitting is one of the few graying factors that's entirely in your control. Smoking and gray hair.
Low B12 or Iron Stores
Low vitamin B12 and low iron stores show up more often in people who gray early. Vitamin B12 deficiency and gray hair and which vitamins matter.
Stress
Chronic stress is linked to graying at the root over weeks to months. Can stress cause gray hair?
For every cause in detail, see what causes gray hair.

Why Are So Many Young Men Going Gray?
There's no good evidence that a whole generation is graying earlier. What studies of young men do show is that early graying is common, and that it clusters with family history, weight and smoking. If you're graying in your teens or early 20s, a blood test for B12, iron and thyroid function is sensible.
How Gray Hair Changes How Men Are Seen
Gray hair does affect first impressions, though not always the way men fear. In experiments with photos of the same face shown with and without gray hair, gray hair made people look older and rated as less attractive. Male raters also judged gray-haired faces as less trustworthy. Gray hair made no difference to how high-status or how aggressive a face looked.

What the Research Shows
A worldwide survey of 4,192 people (Panhard et al., 2012) found that men had significantly more gray hair than women, and that both the age graying starts and how fast it progresses depend on ancestry. Overall, 74% of people aged 45 to 65 had some gray hair.
A study of 6,390 men under 30 (Shin et al., 2015) found that 25.3% had premature graying. A family history of early graying was the strongest link: those men were about 12.8 times as likely to gray early. Obesity (about 2.6 times as likely) and more than five pack-years of smoking (about 1.6 times) were also linked to early graying. Family history and obesity also tracked with how gray men were.
In a 2025 study (Nutt et al.), 120 participants rated faces shown with their natural hair color and with gray hair. Gray hair made faces look older and less attractive, and male raters saw gray-haired faces as less trustworthy. Social status and aggression ratings didn't change.
Your Options
- Embrace it. Plenty of men wear gray well, and a good cut makes a big difference.
- Cover it. Dye and gray-blending products change the strand you can see, not the follicle making new hair, so they need repeating as hair grows.
- Work on what you can change. Don't smoke, keep a healthy weight, manage stress, and get B12 and iron checked if you're graying young.
- Support your natural color. FullyVital's Anti-Gray 30-Day Kit pairs a supplement with a scalp serum. The supplement provides copper, which contributes to normal hair pigmentation (an EU-authorized claim), plus vitamin B12, folate, L-tyrosine and antioxidants such as glutathione. The serum brings peptide and antioxidant actives, including Greyverse and Silverfree, to the scalp. Give it at least one full growth cycle, about three months. The Anti-Gray 90-Day System covers that whole period.

Frequently Asked Questions
At what age do most men turn gray?
There's no fixed age. By middle age most men have some gray, ancestry makes a big difference, and men tend to have more gray than women.
Is greying at 35 normal?
Yes. Some gray at 35 is common and usually genetic. It's worth a check-up only if it's very fast, patchy or comes with other symptoms.
Is gray hair due to a deficiency?
Usually not; genes are the main reason. But low vitamin B12 and low iron stores are found more often in people who gray early, so very early graying is worth a blood test.
Why is Gen Z greying so early?
There's no solid evidence that a whole generation is graying earlier. Early graying in young men is common and is linked to family history, weight and smoking.
Can men reverse gray hair?
Not reliably. Correcting a confirmed deficiency or quitting smoking may help new hair in some cases, but no product can guarantee color comes back.
